Personal Identity among Others

Talking about personal identity for me is not easy at all. When some people are able to be proud with the culture and the identity they have, I am getting confused with what identity I have. Lots of things are fighting in my mind to know the truth of life I live in now. Once I think about that, it is really nice and interesting because it sounds like a mystery. In the other side, the more I think about my identity the more I realize I do not know who I am. Then I ask to myself, why I need to know about my identity? Is that for having appreciation from others (?) or vice versa?
Identity for many people in this world could be the first or the most important thing to be kept in their life. So it seems like a big dignity to have and keep their identity in life. Their dignity is their truthful identity. Then what is identity?
The meaning of identity itself (which I got from Mr. Gazali’s reading material) comes from Latin language which means ‘equal’ or ‘similar’. By identity, people try to classify how similar you are with the people around you, because each person has characters which can be the same with the other ones. That is why we have cultures, as a part of our identity. We have so many, in this world!
Talking about my personal identity, I personally truly feel that I am Indonesian though I am a Chinese ancestry also. I was born in this country and I know a lot about the life I live in Indonesia, especially in Jakarta. I am a Chinese Indonesian and my parents teach me a lot how to face the life as a minority. I have to yield or understand the others first (esp. from other cultures such as Javanese, Bataknese, etc) than myself. My parents said they are stronger and they have power because they are the majority. However, my parents teach me to be strong implicitly, meaning I should have a power inside myself, I am not allowed to give up with everything I am facing in, I have to be a hard worker, I have to be better than people around, I have to be more different (though I have been different). My parents could be very harsh to me, but they said they got a harsh thing from their parents before, that is why they could survive this life in the midst of differences until now.
As a person who lives with many kinds of people, it is inevitable for me to do not get any stereotyping from others about myself. The culture we have, made people (from different cultures) think different as well whether about the politeness, the habit, the characters, etc by using the standard of their culture. So do me. I also have some point of views, opinions about others’ culture, and even some stereotypes for others. Then I realized it as a usual thing, we just need to accept it and appreciate it. However, not all stereotypes are negative or bad.
Again, in this social life I have to develop my awareness that I live with others. Personal identity among others always has two sides whether it is positive or negative. People might think we are different. One thing that we cannot avoid is we live together. We may and need to keep our identity, and do not forget to keep and appreciate others’ identity as well.

Your Name: Where All Things is Started

Life is such a big mystery. Sometimes it’s too confusing to talk about where our life was started. One thing I know, name is a part of your big mystery. Your name is meaningful. It was where all things started. When you were born, then your parents would think a lot about your name. It is all about your parents’ hope, your characters, yourself inside your name! Be proud of it!
So, let me tell you more about mine.

My parents gave a word of ‘Merry’ as the name of me. Believe it or not, my name is only one word ‘Merry’ and it was given by my father, my daddy.
Before I write this all, I asked my mother about the history of my name (completely).
No longer then I truly know the history of me! #yeay
So this is where all things of my life started.
My mommy said that I was born at Mekar Sari Hospital on March 18, 1993.
My mother was so great to bear the first child of her (It’s me).
No longer then, my father decided to give me ‘Merry’ as my name.
You know why? Because I was born with many letters of ‘M’
Mekar Sari, March and.. My father thought it’s a western name. He felt that is very good for his first child and I still use it till now!
Not only that. Having Chinese family background made me have this name as well.
The name of Merry means ‘Mei Li’ in Chinese language.
The name of Mei Li means beautiful.
So every single person who uses this name, meaning the person is hoped to be beautiful, gorgeous, and perfect, and my father chose it for me!
Does that mean I am beautiful? That’s your opinion. Just tell me the honest fact. Thanks ;)

So far, I feel really good to use and to have this name. I realized that my name also has another meaning. In English, Merry means Happy. So I am a happy person, am I? Well, I feel it.
This name made me realize why I am always cheerful. That is my world. I love to be free and happy. I love my name. My name is (only) Merry and I don’t want to change my name at all.
It is given, the best given from my parents.
My name is my identity since I was born, till now.
Whether my name ‘Merry’ has been popular to be used, it’s not a big deal.
Even, if I need any addition, I prefer to use ‘Evangeline’ as my last name.
Though I don’t know exactly the meaning of it, I just feel the name of ‘Evangeline’ has a power for me. I found that means you are strong!
Some tell me, it is also related to Evangelist.
Though I am not that kind of people to be an evangelist, it does not matter.
Otherwise, I wish I am able to make my faith gets stronger, to believe in God.
That’s mine.

Second Language Teachnology

Teaching and Language Learning – Reflective Journal I

Many people today tend to master more than one language. No one can deny that being a bilingual will gain some benefits in life. It will make every bilingual can get more knowledge, economical advantages and even a higher social status. That is why many children today are required to learn more than one language in their schools. “Many have proposed that there are advantages to the early introduction of a second language in school.” (Cenoz and Genesee, 1998 in Garcia, 2009)
Knowing this fact, many teachers nowadays are demanded to teach second language to their students by using another way, which is easier to understand. Technology has been a great answer for them till present. Technology still sounds like a *miracle* for helping many teachers in this era in doing teaching second language (esp. English). Technology helps teachers to visualize their materials for students a lot. Teaching is not a kind of telling students the materials by only saying words to students (anymore). Every teacher nowadays is able to use many kinds of technologies, such as computer, projector, tape recorder, or even marker for delivering the materials. It would grab the students' attention for sure. Teaching second language now is familiar with technology. That is why I call it as T-E-A-C-H-N-O-L-O-G-Y. Then, let us make our students get smart understanding about language by using teachnology :)

When I Become Lazy

When I become lazy..
I don't know what to do.
I just want to have fun.
Everything looks easy for now
and never think about what's going on after that.

When I become lazy..
All my friends will know.
I lose my spirit
and they think I am frustrated.

When I become lazy..
I feel satisfied.
I am able to do what I want.
Without thinking that it's terrible.

Oh, God..
Let me free, but..
Let me know.
It's a bad character.
I need to be grateful with all things I have.

I don't want to be lazy!
(Anymore)

A Letter For New Friends

Dear New Friends,

In this new college, I found you all to be my friends.
At first, I never think that it will be nice.
Full of fear, shame, and also mystery.
Sometimes it looks like wasting time.
Is it terrible?

Then I tried to adapt all new situation.
I need a bravery to do it.
Because when you feel comfort with your zone,
then you know that you must change it,
It's not an easy thing.

Trying to be an open-minded.
It's the key.
You will know that it's a very nice thing to have new friends.
You will find something that you haven't known, you haven't heard, you haven't seen yet!
It's from you, my new friends.

No longer then, you will find also your good friend.
All friends are good :)
What I mean is about a friend who is able to understand each other.
You may say it as best friend.
But actually your best friend is not only yours.
Your best friend can be others' best friend.
And it's okay.
Your friend is not to be owned.
It's for completing your life.

Sometimes you will be touched by how kind is your friend.
A kindness that you will never know.
A kindness that you will never think before.
A kindness that you need to have.
That's all from you friends.
Even from your 'best' friend.
For me, we needn't judge someone to be our best friends.
Because we have so many best friends in our life, in each situation, in your heart.
The best our 'best' friends are friends who never leave you when you feel sorrow.

This is for you, my new friends at SSE :)

With Love,

Merry

This disaster shocked everyone in this world.
Japan previously safe and peaceful, suddenly destroyed!
Though we know that Japan is a very good country which is able to control this situation better than other countries..
It's still a very big disaster.
There is no one who wants to know this disaster!
Well..
Almost everyone in this world has known about earthquake-prone in Japan, and..
Do you want to know why the state of Japan prone to earthquakes even tsunami?
The Japanese archipelago is located in an area where several continental and oceanic plates meet. This is the cause of frequent earthquakes and the presence of many volcanoes and hot springs across Japan. If earthquakes occur below or close to the ocean, they may trigger tidal waves (tsunami).

Knowing that disaster is not always easy.
We must be sad because of this news.
Even if there's someone who lives there,
whether it's our family, our friends or our partner..

What can we do for now is only hope.
Hope all people there feel safe now.
Hope all things there will be okay as soon as possible.
Hope God let us know that the disaster He gave to this world is a part of His power!
We should always remember that our lives depend on God :)
Do not ever regret with this problem.
Though it's a very big problem, a very hard problem..
Just believe that we have something that we can learn..

Let's PRAY FOR JAPAN!

Ganbatte! 頑張って!

Good for Us Means Good for God?

God is Good
Everyone is familiar with these words :)
Not only that..
Everyone will also admit with pleasure that it's true!
Hm, after knowing that God is good, so what?
How about ourselves?
Are we good?
Am I good?
Answer this thing only to ourselves.

In one side, be confident is one of good characters of human's self.
So don't worry with yourself.
If you say that you are good. I believe it's true.
If you say that you are not good. It's only because you are so humble.
Everyone is good. Even great!
Because we are created by Him, Our God.

Well, now.. How if we have another thought about this one for a while.
I've ever read this quote..
"I am good, but not as good as I could or should be"
It's great, isn't it?
It has a big meaning that actually each of us has a big talent.
We just need to do our best.
Because sometimes, most people have satisfied with what they have, what they are for now.
Why don't we think that actually God has created us to do a big thing in this world..
Let's do something that it's a good of you.
Let's do something that it's what we should be :)

How about doing something that sometimes we thought it's good for us?
Such as lying for a good cause..
Each of us certainly ever did this thing.
Hm, may we do it constantly?
If the situation insist us to do it, I think we'll think that it's good for us.
How about God? Is it good for God?
Sin is still sin.
My teacher in Junior High School taught me 'Though, it's a small or big sin. It's still a sin for us'
Hm, it's hard, right?
Everything that it's good for us, sometimes we still have to consider whether it's good or not for God.
Considering it is a good, because we live to serve Him, to serve God.
Let's do something good for us and good for God start from now :)

When we put our cares in His hands, He puts His peace in our hearts. ~Author Unknown

Valentine’s Day is prohibited? Who cares?

In this sweet morning,
when I woke up from my dream,
Suddenly I got 'one' great message for sure from my friend!

“Today is Valentine’s Day.
Don’t ever celebrate the Valentine’s Day, because actually the meaning of Valentine’s Day is from the death of a pastor named Valentinus on February 14th.”

Well, thank you very much for my beloved friend.
I really appreciated this information because I got a new knowledge from this news.
But… Wow!
Actually I also screamed in my heart, it really surprised me…
Is it important for others to know?
What does it mean?
It means there is no chocolate, there is no flower, there is no gift, or even there is no LOVE?
I believe everyone needs LOVE.
Who is the one who needn’t love?
Is it me? I will answer… NO! I perfectly need it.
Is it you? I believe you will also answer the same thing like me, YOU perfectly need it.
Is it my friend? Of course my friend also needs it. My friend is also a human.
We need LOVE everyday.

Why don’t we have a positive side for a while?
For me, the name of Valentine’s Day is only a name.
And the date of February 14th is also a part of 365 days.
It’s one of the ways for us to spread our love to others…
Actually I still have another side about Valentine’s Day…
Why should we care about the death of the pastor named Valentinus?
May I say that Valentine’s Day is as Merry’s Day or David’s Day or… any others name that you want!
Because the main point here is only about how do we spread our love to others?
Sometimes we feel shy to give a sweet chocolate or
Even a bunch of flowers to someone that you love, you care…
You just don’t know at what time you would like to give it…
Waiting for their birthdays? It’s quite long time for sure.
Valentine’s Day? Cute! What a good idea!
It’s a good time for everyone to share their loves to others, I think.

I am sorry to know that the fact of Valentine’s Day is the death of the pastor.
But… I am happy to know, we have a universal day for spreading our love to others in this cute day…
Valentine’s Day! ooh, no no no..
Merry’s Day! lol
Yes! A chocolate day, a sweet day, wow… yummy!
You know? Even I just know that my friends just become a new couple today.
Valentine’s Day is also the reason for everyone to use this special moment to say ‘I Love U’
So we are able to see new couples in this world.

Well, the last message is…
Love your life in every single day!
Not only at Valentine’s Day for sure!
